Improved portal[1] is an upgraded version of the main stockpile, which allows dwarfs to make expeditions and search for additional resources in biomes,[2] by using the multiplayer game spell.
Once crafted, the improved portal cannot be downgraded, and the spell to access biomes will henceforth be available in the inventory among other spells.
