Tools are items used for a great variety of tasks, the most important of which are mining and lumbering.
They can be given individually to dwarfs through the firs tab of the "Equip" menu (axe icon).
Dwarfs will use some others only automatically, so they won't appear in the "Equip" menu.
All tools though can be found in the 4th tab of the "Craft" menu (helmet icon).
Starter
All new dwarfs come with a stone knife that is used for fighting, lumbering and mining.
